My design for the hair of 'Estella' is inspired by the image above. I thought that the hair needed a structure to it like many of the Victorian hairstyles. For the character I thought that her hair should be lighter to signify her coldness. My model is blonde so I will use the natural colour to convey the romantic side. I am going to create the character from her teenage years in the novel, so the hairstyle will be soft yet structured to show her romantic yet cold sides.
The hairstyle consists of four braids from two pigtails then wrapped around each other to create this structure at the back. This style works best with thicker hair. A section is left at the bottom and then curled. At first the front section was pulled back to join the curly section at the bottom. However, in class we learnt a technique to give the hair a wave.
The hairstyle practised in class was a lot thinner then my doll at home. This meant that I needed to back comb a bit to get a bigger texture and area. I also needed to smooth the hair out first to create a smooth finish.
To create the front section you will need to:
- Section the hair in the middle. Every section you will be curling needs to be even.
- Pull up the first section of hair, using the curling tongs put the tong to the base of the hair avoiding the scalp.
-Pull up about 2 inches and wrap hair around the tong. Push this back to the scalp, holding the end of the hair at all times with your free hand.
- Pull back up, wrapping more hair around the tong and repeat pushing back to the scalp.
- Repeat this until all of the hair has been curled onto the tong. Hold until hot to the touch, and release.
- Put a sectioning clip into the curl to hold. Go on to the next section along, the section needs to be the same size around the front for continuity.
- Allow the hair to cool and then take the sectioning clip out.
- Holding the hair in the palm of your hand, brush out and put some shine spray into the hair. This will smooth the hair out creating a nicer finish. If you hold the end of the hair and push up a wave will be created.
A wave can be seen in the image above. The hair hasn't been set with shine spray which is why there is a lot of fly away. This section of hair at the front was curled and then pulled around to the back to join the section at the bottom of the head. I think that the style, if on thin hair, needs to be fuller in the middle of the head as it looks lacking in shape. Therefore I would back comb this to make it fuller.
The parting where the two pigtails are needs to be smaller as well, this means I would need to put the pigtails closer together to avoid this.
